Niskayuna Ground Breaking

 

On April 22, 2013 at 9:00 a.m., a ceremonial groundbreaking was held for Walmart’s new Neighborhood Market in Niskayuna, New York.  The ceremony consisted of Walmart senior executives and local officials. The new Neighborhood Market will be the first in upstate New York and will be around 40,000 square feet, one-quarter of the  Walmart Supercenter size.  The store will consist of a grocery area, pharmacy, general merchandise, and beauty and health items.  The store is expected to open in October and will have 90 full and part-time positions available to the community.  The new Neighborhood Market is located at 3241 State, St, Niskayuna.

Y Program Receives $20,000 From Walmart

Children participating in the Watertown Y’s School Age Child Care program will receive healthier snacks and meals in the coming year thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. Bridgette R. Gates, senior director of operations for the Y’s youth and children’s programs, said the funds help offset the rising cost of food, particularly produce. “A lot of kids, because produce is getting more expensive a lot of times, they have a harder time getting fruits and vegetables,” she said. “We also added cooking clubs to our programs and (children) learn how to cook the food.”

Walmart Plans to Hire 100,000 Veterans Over Five Years

Walmart Stores Inc (WMT.N), the world’s largest retailer, said it plans to hire more than 100,000 veterans in the United States over the next five years, a move supported by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Most of the veterans will be placed in the company’s stores and clubs, and some will be employed in distribution centers, Walmart U.S. Chief Executive Bill Simon said in a speech to be to delivered on Tuesday at the National Retail Federation conference.

Walmart Gives $70,000 to 14 Nonprofits Providing Warm Clothing on the 12th Day of “12 Days of Giving” Holiday Campaign

Walmart awards grants to organizations from Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Dec. 21, 2012 – On the 12th day of its “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign, Walmart is awarding $70,000 to 14 nonprofits that provide warm clothing to those in need in their local communities. One of the winning organizations, Assistance League of Yuma, serves its community by using proceeds from their thrift store to provide clothing, shoes, hats and more to children in need. Operation School Bell allows the organization to bring groups of students from rural schools twice a year to get clothing.

Over twelve consecutive days, Walmart has awarded a total of $1.5 million to 140 organizations across the country that are providing basic needs and services such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Organizations receiving grants today are featured on Walmart’s Live Better tab on Facebook. The organizations serve communities in: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

“As temperatures drop, many people lack the resources to buy clothes to keep themselves and their families warm throughout the winter,” said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of the Walmart Foundation. “The local organizations selected today are meeting this need in their communities with donations of cold-weather essentials such as socks, coats and gloves.”

Walmart’s November call for submissions resulted in more than 21,677 nominations from Facebook users who submitted descriptions of each nonprofit’s impact in its local community. Submissions were initially reviewed by Walmart associates from across the company and then a panel from the Walmart Foundation selected the winning organizations.

One of the winning organizations, Island Harvest, is a food bank serving Long Island, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. Following the storm, the organization immediately came to the rescue by visiting hard hit neighborhoods and delivering food and supplies.
